The Public Commision for the Preservation of the Legacy of Academician A.D.Sakharov
When Andrei Sakharov died in December 1989, his widow Elena Bonner, with the support of leading scientists, writers and other members of the Russian intelligentsia, organized The Public Commision for the Preservation of the Legacy of Academician A.D.Sakharov.
The Sakharov Commision (The Andrei Sakharov Foundation (Russia)) was first registered in 1990 by the Moscow City Soviet. It was reorganized in 1993 and officially registered on September 3 of that year by the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation as a nongovernmental organization created to preserve the legacy of Andrei Sakharov and promote the values which he advocated through appropriate charitable, educational, and scholarly projects. The Sakharov Commission has established The Sakharov Archives in Moscow andThe Andrei Sakharov Museum and Community Center “Peace, Progress, Human Rights”.
