In Memoriam of Yuri Fedorov.
Yuri Fedorov, 79, of New York, passed away September 27, 2022, after a long battle with lupus. An outstanding human being, Yuri was also a well-known Soviet dissident and a former political prisoner. He was one of the principal figurants of the so-called aircraft case that has enabled the emigration possibility for the Soviet Jewry in 1970s. Yuri’s personal courage helped to open borders for hundreds of thousands refugees while landing him in a maximum security camp for 15 years. After release Yuri moved to the US where he spearheaded the Gratitude Foundation to benefit the dissidents straitened back in Russia. He carried on with this task for many years up until his last days despite the punishing illness.
All those who have gained freedom through his sacrifice will treasure the grateful memory of Yuri.
Many prominent figures in the Russian-speaking diaspora have contributed eulogies, including Nathan Scharansky and Iosif Mendelevich.
